Question 20
COMPREHENSION
In Nigeria, members of the second and of the emerging generation of poets can aptly be described as engines of socio-political and economic change. They have used poetry as a medium of encounter to decry the political tyranny and corruption of the nation’s political rules; the kleptocracy of the fourth Republic rulers; and the environmental degradation of the Niger Delta region. These poets are committed to describing and irradiating the desperate political and socio-economic situation in their country. Due to the disillusionment of these poets with political misrule in Nigeria, they became the voice of voiceless Nigerians. While much critical work has been written on the second generation poets, critical analysis has been few and far as far as the poetry of the emerging generation is concerned; what is more, critical commentaries on these poets have been oppugnant.

The main criticism against the fourth republic rulers is:

  • A.Political tyranny
  • B.Environmental degradation in the Niger Delta
  • C.Political ineptitude
  • D.Corruption and opulent lifestyle
